Chandler police arrest sex assault suspect in 1991 cold case

Chandler police have a man in custody nearly 30 years after a sexual assault case went cold.
Gary Robert Young, 65, was arrested at his home near 40th Street and McDowell Road Wednesday morning in connection to the November 1991 case. He was booked into jail on suspicion of multiple felony charges of sexual assault, aggravated assault, kidnapping and burglary.
It’s unclear if he has a lawyer yet who can speak on his behalf.
Police said a 26-year-old woman was kidnapped at gunpoint and sexually assaulted at an apartment near Dobson and Frye roads in Chandler on Nov. 8, 1991.
A composite sketch was released, evidence was collected and witnesses interviewed, but police said no suspect was identified and the case went cold.
In the early 2000s, police sent evidence from the sexual assault to the Arizona Department of Public Safety Lab where male DNA was identified.
"As standard practice in these cases, the DNA made its way into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS)," Chandler police stated. "It did not reveal a suspect, but connected a second sexual assault case from 1992."
Court documents state that 1992 case involved a 15-year-old girl who was approached by a man who identified himself as a private investigator. He said he was investigating fires set by children in an alley near 40th Street and McDowell Road, which is the same area of his current residence, records state. The man then kidnapped her, drove her to a home, and sexually assautled her.
Chandler police said they used investigative genetic genealogy resulting in a list of possible leads including Gary Young.
In July, detectives did surveillance on him and collected his DNA, police said. It was then to the state lab and police allege that Gary Young's DNA was linked to the sexual assault.
The 65-year-old was 36 at time of the alleged incident and he and the victim were strangers, police said.
He was jailed in lieu of $75,000 cash-only bond with court dates Aug. 11 and 14, court documents state.
