SRP’s ‘Touchdowns for Teachers’ program funds 98 educators

A trio of Glendale teachers are among those who won grants during the football season thanks to the Arizona Cardinals and Salt River Project.

For the second season, SRP partnered with Cardinals Charities for the Touchdowns for Teachers program, which awards grants to two deserving teachers every time the Cardinals score a touchdown. In total, the Cardinals scored 49 touchdowns this season, so 98 teachers won $500 for a total of $49,000 in teacher grants.

The winning teachers included Kerry Bell of Bicentennial South Elementary School, 7240 W. Colter St.; Patrick MacLean of Glendale High School, 6216 W. Glendale Ave.; and Henderika Tenuyl of Copper Canyon High School, 9126 W. Camelback Road.

“I am so excited to be an SRP ‘Touchdowns for Teachers’ winner,” Ms. Bell said. “The $500 will be used to help make virtual learning a little more enjoyable for my students. I am so appreciative to be receiving this, it means I get to purchase some things that have been on my wish list for a while.”

Mr. MacLean will put his grant toward STEM education.

“Winning this donation of $500 to our program means we can purchase the necessary tools and supplies for a national STEM activity, SeaPerch,” he said. “The students build and compete with remotely operated underwater vehicles. They will bring the vehicles to life by learning about electronics, buoyancy, and propulsion through hands-on construction of their SeaPerch vehicles.

Ms. Tenuyl, in her 13th year of teaching, will use the funds for a new program.

“I just started building a brand-new program, Graphic Design, at the school,” she said. “I will probably buy a larger piece of equipment and supplies for the class/students that we could use to create school spirit merchandise. However, I also want the students’ input since all of what I do is for them.”

SRP provided $1.3 million in teacher resources and grants in 2019.

“It may have been a tough ending for Cardinals fans, but players did their part in raising funds for teachers,” SRP senior education representative Kevin Rolfe stated in a news release. “For the 2020-2021 season, the Cardinals scored 11 more touchdowns than the year before. That’s a $9,000 boost for deserved educators. During the 2019-2020 NFL season, SRP ‘Touchdowns for Teachers’ awarded $40,000 to 80 educators. SRP’s ‘Touchdowns for Teachers’ is a fun way to celebrate and reward teachers, while cheering on the home team.”

Teachers who are employed at a public, charter or nonprofit private school in SRP service territory or impact areas can sign up to win. SRP customers are encouraged to share the contest with their favorite teachers.
