State troopers arrested a man on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol while his 21-month-old son was in the vehicle.

Joshua Edwards, 31, faces charges of aggravated DUI, endangerment and possession of an open container in a vehicle.

Before 11 p.m. Monday, an Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper was patrolling eastbound Interstate 10 in Avondale when he spotted a vehicle traveling 81 mph in a 55 mph zone. The trooper reported the vehicle driving recklessly by following a semitruck too closely and making rapid lane changes.

The trooper pulled over the vehicle near 107th Avenue and McDowell Road, and identified the driver as Mr. Edwards, who showed signs of impairment.

Records state the trooper found about two dozen open containers of beer and mini liquor bottles inside the vehicle. Mr. Edwards admitted to drinking a beer earlier in the day.

Court documents state Mr. Edwards had a breath alcohol content as high as 0.159, nearly two times the legal limit in Arizona.

The Arizona Department of Child Safety was notified, although the child’s mother responded to the scene to take custody of him. Records state the couple and their child lived less than a mile from where Mr. Edwards was stopped.

Mr. Edwards was booked into jail but was released on his own recognizance.
