Posted

Authorities have arrested a man wanted in connection with a theft from an armored vehicle in Tempe.

According to a release,  the FBI Violent Crime Task Force arrested Edwin “Johnny” Jobany Villa, 23, without incident around 7 p.m. Monday near 59th Avenue and Camelback Road in Phoenix.

The FBI said Mr. Villa was transported to the Fourth Avenue Jail and is facing four charges including conspiracy to commit theft, two felony theft charges, and unlawful use of means of transportation.

The FBI and Tempe Police Department had been investigating a theft from a Brinks armored vehicle which occurred around noon Oct. 27 outside Costco, 1445 W. Elliot Road in Tempe. The armored vehicle, which was located behind The Dump Store, 1345 W. Elliot Road, was unoccupied with money missing. According to reports, over $1 million was stolen.

On Oct. 30, a state arrest warrant was issued for Mr. Villa, who was determined to be the driver of the armored vehicle.

Mr. Villa was jailed in lieu of a $2 million cash-only bond with court dates Nov. 12 and 15 in Mesa.

The FBI's Violent Crime Task Force is made up of the Phoenix Police Department, Scottsdale Police Department, Maricopa County Sheriff's Office FATE team, Maricopa County Attorney's Office, and the FBI.

Brinks, a non-governmental organization, was offering a reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Mr. Villa.

Anyone with information about the case can call the FBI at 623-466-1999. Tips can also be reported to tips.fbi.gov.

The public should be reminded that the above are merely allegations and that all persons are to be considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
