Apache Junction Public Library celebrates Dia de los Muertos

Storyteller and performance artist Zarco Guerrero and musician Carmen de Novais will explore the culture, significance and rituals of the Dia de los Muertos holiday in the free adult program, “Dia de los Muertos Storytelling,” at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2, at the library, 1177 N. Idaho Road.

Widely celebrated throughout Mexico, Latin America and the Southwest, the Day of the Dead pays homage to those who preceded us with prayers, food and altars, according to a release.

In “Dia de los Muertos Storytelling,” Guerrero demystifies death though tales and music, and brings to life the magic and pathos of the human experience through his engaging creations such as the poetry-spouting “El Vato Poeta,” the flirtatious “La Comadre,” the clueless “Special Ed” and the wise “El Abuelito.”

Guerrero is a sculptor and muralist whose art has been exhibited nationally and in Mexico. An Arizona native, he has been instrumental in the development of Latino arts statewide, and received multiple awards including a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The program will be presented in-person at the library. Those uncomfortable attending live events may register for the virtual version by emailing librarystaff@apachejunctionaz.gov to request a Zoom link.

Go to ajpl.org or call 480-474-8555 for more information. “Dia de los Muertos Storytelling” is made possible by the Arizona Humanities Council and the Friends of the Library of Apache Junction.
