The Western Wiffle Ball Classic will return to Scottsdale Stadium — the spring training home of the San Francisco Giants — on Saturday, Oct. 16, with the tournament beginning at 9 a.m.
The 14-year-old founder Logan Rose is the visionary behind the Western Wiffle Ball Classic, according to a press release, noting the inaugural event in 2020 had over 20 teams compete for the trophy.
Rose began his journey in the sport by creating Big League Wiffle Ball in July of 2019. In less than two years, he grew the league to six teams, over 1,000 subscribers on YouTube, and over 2,000 Instagram followers.
In 2020, he hosted a competitive tournament for all ages at the Fenway Park of Major League Baseball’s warm-up season, Scottsdale Stadium, during the depths of COVID, said the release.
“I was so excited to see all the teams come out in 2020 and have an amazing day of Wiffle ball,” said Rose in a prepared statement.
“I have a lot of ideas to continue the growth of this tournament and cannot wait for this year’s event. I am happy to have the opportunity to host the Western Wiffle Ball Classic again and have plans to turn it into one of America’s most recognizable wiffle ball tournaments.”
The expanded 2021 tournament will allow for up to 42 teams to enjoy a competitive championship tournament. All fields will be set up on Scottsdale Stadium’s main field, which has hosted baseball since 1956, the release noted.
Teams will be comprised of three to five players, each team guaranteed to play three games each. Games will last 35 minutes or four innings, whichever comes first. Then, 16 teams advance to a single-elimination tournament.
All ages are welcome and encouraged to participate in the tournament, the release said, noting the winner and runner-up will be awarded the Western Wiffle Ball Classic trophy.
The Home Run Derby Championship will return to this year’s tournament and will be active for the duration of the tournament. Each participant will have seven outs to hit as many home runs as possible.
The Home Run Derby champion will receive a trophy, added the release.
“The Home Run Derby is such a cool experience, we planned it so that participants get to hit from the mound and on the diamond. It’s any Baseball fan’s dream,” said Rose.
