Out of the Darkness Phoenix Walk: Raising Awareness of Suicide Prevention will be held from 10:20 a.m. to 12 p.m., on Sunday Nov. 3 at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale.

Suicide among veterinarians, who are about 3.5 times more likely to die by suicide than other Americans, has become a growing problem, according to a press release.

For the past 30 years, research has consistently shown that vets are at a higher risk of suicide than the general population due to many factors including occupational stress, depression, and “burnout syndrome,” the release noted.

A national provider of emergency and specialty veterinary services, BluePearl, wants to help reduce the suicide numbers amongst colleagues by participating in more than 20 Out of the Darkness Community Walks nationwide.

BluePearl vets and technicians will unite with more than 400 communities to raise awareness and funds that support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention in its goal of reducing the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025, the release said.

Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the U.S., claiming the lives of more than 47,000 people in 2017; an estimated 1,400,000 people attempt suicide each year, added the release.
