Toca Madera to open at Scottsdale Fashion Square

Posted

The modern organic Mexican concept Toca Madera will open its doors in Scottsdale Tuesday, Oct. 22.

The fine dining restaurant comes from Tosh Berman and Amrou Manaseer, co-founders of The Madera Group—the same visionary hospitality team behind Toca Madera’s neighbor Tocaya Organica.

The restaurant is at 4763 N. Goldwater Blvd. in the new luxury wing of Scottsdale Fashion Square, this will be the concept’s first in Arizona, according to a press release.

Guests will enter the 8,000-square-foot space through a courtyard that flows from the dining area to the lounge. The Scottsdale restaurant features an open floor plan where the dining room provides views into the kitchen and the ceviche bar.

A large skylight brings natural light into the dining room, in the middle of which stand tall ficus trees. Operable glass walls open the dining room to the patio.

Toca Madera’s atmosphere includes music production effort that pairs local and international DJs alongside performance artists.

"At our Scottsdale location, we want guests to feel as though they’re stepping into another reality," Mr. Berman said in a prepared statement.

"From the sophisticated design to the theatrical spirit through which we serve food and beverage, every element has been precisely chosen to provide an unparalleled dining experience. The community has been incredibly supportive since opening Tocaya next door so we’re excited to introduce another one of our concepts to the area."

Executive Chef Joseph Castillo, a native of Southern California whose culinary experience includes the Patina Restaurant Group and Sushi Roku at the W Scottsdale.

The menu is composed of Mexican cuisine with a focus on pairing bold flavors with sustainable and organic ingredients. The menu will also feature vegan and gluten-free options.

The Scottsdale location will also feature a raw bar, serving dishes such as Sashimi Mexicano and Ceviche Blanco.

Platos pequeños (small plates) include Pozole Verde, Empanadas Oaxaca and Queso Fundido, as well as a vegan Guacamole served with warm plantain chips.

A portion of the menu, appropriately named "Rocks," features high-grade proteins ranging from Jidori chicken and grass-fed carne asada to American and Japanese wagyu, each served over hot lava stones. Other menu sections are Salads, Taquerìa, Entrees, and Dulces.

Director of Beverage Charity Johnston and Bar Manager Richard Allison will lead the "farm-to-glass" bar program, which uses fresh, seasonal ingredients in craft cocktails and features a wide variety of fine tequilas and mezcals.

"Toca Madera at Scottsdale Fashion Square is an exciting concept that reflects how people today want not only delicious food and a great atmosphere, but also a fully immersive, unique entertainment experience that can’t be found anywhere else in the market," Michael Guerin, senior vice president, leasing, macerich, said in a prepared statement.

"This is a perfect fit for the experience-forward luxury wing at our always-evolving top property in Arizona."

The idea for Toca Madera, which is Spanish for "knock on wood," was born when Mr. Berman moved to the Los Angeles area after living in Mexico for six years.

He discovered, a release states, a dearth of restaurants that embodied what he believed to be the true essence of Mexican cuisine, which is incredibly healthy, simple and fresh. He joined forces with Mr. Manaseer in 2013.

Toca Madera will serve dinner from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. Tuesday, Friday and Saturday and from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday.

The restaurant will be closed on Mondays through the end of the year and will be closed Sundays until Nov. 10. Beginning Nov. 9, brunch will be offered from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Happy hour, with a limited menu and discounts on food and drink, is 4 to 7 p.m. daily, with extended offerings on Tuesday until 8 p.m.
