Maria Wojtczak wrote “driving is not a rite of passage, it’s a life skill and a life-or-death responsibility” in a recent op-ed on why she believes Arizonans of all ages need to be better prepared when they head out on Valley roadways. Here’s a selection of reader comments.
From Nextdoor
“Tickets for speeding, get the police and or cameras on freeways please! Go after the ones doing 10-15-20 over not seniors going 7 over. It appears to be discrimination. The 101, the 10, the 17, the 51 all need ticket traps. Set up cameras. It’s time b/c these drivers are unsafe for everyone. Those zigzagzipper motorcycles are asking to die when they weave in and out of traffic while speeding, and then the F150 pickup or any pickup, comes along and speeds faster does not give a good outcome ever!!!! Get them off the road — 3 speeding tickets you are out of a license!!! Go after them NOT seniors going 7 over the limit.” — Pat E.
“I’m a retired Secretary of State driving instructor. In 15 minutes of driving on any street I can point out at least 20 violations that the cars around me are making. People speeding and being distracted by their phones, earbuds, pets in their laps are a problem. And the politicians who passed the law saying that motorcycles could drive in between cars, that was a huge mistake.” — Mario Coronato
“In all truth, I thought it was Arizona drivers. Coming from California, I have 50 years of knowledge about how people drive there. I never experienced so many risky drivers until Arizona. Why anyone would drive behind someone pulling out of a parking space who is already halfway out I do not know. Perhaps Arizona drivers are rushing around because they’re not used to having so many people!” — Kay Hanson

“No, what needs to change is actual enforcement. For everyone. Like kids standing up in seats with no seatbelts cop right next to them doesn’t pull them over because they look poor and giving tickets would hurt them … all the FaceTime users and people holding phones, distracted. Don’t make laws you won't enforce.” — James Craven
“Boooo.” — first last
“Take your laws back to California where you belong.” — Walter Norris
“Well, Walter, it’s true, and it’s law throughout most states.” — I.O.
