SFD toy drive collects more than 12,000 toys

Scottsdale Fire Department wrapped up its 2019 Toy Drive with more than 12,000 toys collected throughout November and December.

“We are fortunate to have a very generous community,” said Scottsdale Fire Chief Tom Shannon in a prepared statement. “Our partner agencies report that many families were made very happy through the donations received through our annual drive.”

Toys were collected at each of Scottsdale’s fire stations, police district offices, Public Safety Headquarters and a variety of local businesses.

The drive also received a big push by a special event at Scottsdale Fashion Square where families donating toys received free passes to the 2020 Disney on Ice show, according to a press release. The lines formed in the wee hours of the morning for a chance to trade for this great incentive.

Agencies receiving these donations this year include:

  • Paiute Neighborhood Center;
  • Vista Del Camino;
  • HonorHealth at Shea, Osborn and Thompson Peak;
  • Family Promise; and
  • Arizona Helping Hands.

SFD volunteers donated hours each day to collect the toys and distribute the toys to the agencies.

“Volunteers are the cornerstone to this drive. Without their help, it would be a challenge to manage,” Mr. Shannon said. “It really is a team approach to connect the dots and help those in need.”
