Scottsdale seeks new presiding judge amid Oclavage retirement

Presiding City Judge Joseph Oclavage is retiring in March 2022, creating an opening for one of Scottsdale’s top municipal positions.

Oclavage has been with Scottsdale City Court for more than 30 years, serving the last decade as presiding judge.

Independent archives show Oclavage is the second-highest-paid city employee, earning $221,083.20.

A public job posting for the new city presiding judge was posted on the city’s website Oct. 18, by Human Resources Director Donna Brown.

The presiding city judge is responsible for the executive leadership, direction and management for the city’s court system and administering justice in cases involving alleged violations of Arizona laws and city ordinances, according to the city’s posting. The presiding judge also oversees a team of 61 people, the post states.

The city is conducting a national recruitment for this job, open until Nov. 15, led by Ralph Andersen & Associates.

The job posting states the salary range for the presiding judge is $176,072 to $256,006. According to an 11-page recruitment document available online, the Scottsdale City Council expects to publicly select a new presiding judge in February 2022.
