Rotary Club, Chaparral High team up to make a difference in Scottsdale

The Rotary Club of Scottsdale is always looking for ways to work with local schools to showcase the importance of community service through involvement with students.
Rotary Club President, John Campbell asked two of his board members, Justine Hurry and Mary Blank, to work with Chaparral High School to renew the Chaparral Interact Club, after a pause during COVID-19. Through the pandemic, much of the outreach from the Scottsdale Rotary Club to students was handled through internet meetings.
“It is important to be able to meet with students in person,” Campbell said in a press release.
Max Rumbaugh and Mary Blank, past presidents of the Rotary Club of Scottsdale met with Chaparral High School Principal, Todd Dreifort and Counselor, Leslie Rold to express the desire of the Rotary Club to once again partner with Chaparral to host scholarship competitions for all SUSD high schools and reinvigorate the Chaparral Interact Club. Dreifort was pleased to have the opportunity to work with the Rotary Club again, according to the press release.
The Chaparral Interact Club President Sebastian Jablonski, along with its officers Vice President James Hurry; Secretary/Treasurer Payton Campbell and Official Photographer Collin Blank held a meeting on Feb. 24 at the Scottsdale Rotary Park.
The Club decided they would like to assist a Title I school and voted for Hohokam Elementary. After reaching out to Lily Saldana, community specialist for Hohokam, the students obtained a list of essential items.
The Interact Club Officers organized a meeting at Walmart with its members.
The group divided into teams and purchased a plethora of supplies including dry erase markers, headphones, crayons, hand sanitizers, etc. It was a great experience as the students embraced the opportunity to help other students in Scottsdale.
On March 21 the Chaparral Interactors went to Hohokam Elementary and met with Saldana to deliver the donated items. Saldana expressed her gratitude as the students carried the items into the school.
“Service Above Self” is one of the cornerstones of the Rotary Club of Scottsdale. The Club always strives to work with youth to promote the importance of getting involved and giving back to the community.
