PVSchools students named semifinalists, commended in National Merit program

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has released the names of the 2020 National Merit semifinalists and the 2020 National Merit commended, featuring a plethora of students from Paradise Valley Unified School District.

PVSchools had 12 students make the cur for National Merit semifinalists while 22 students earned the title of commended student, according to a press release.

From Horizon High School, Pepper Markovich and Sona Shah were semifinalists. Commended students from Horizon included Elizabeth Brammer, Mya Brouhard, Joseph Lines, Joshua Loeffler, Emma Bakall Loewgren and Lily Moskowitz.

At Paradise Valley High School, Amuyla Bhaskara, Pragnya Karlapudi and Raghav Warrier were semifinalists. Alexander Agnello, Drew Christner, Ayslin Exum, Bridget Glass and Alexandra Rolfness were named commended students.

Pinnacle High School students Jacob Eaton, Allison Kwan, Anika Larson, John Pye, Joshua Siegel and Leah Veneziano became semifinalists.

Fellow Pinnacle students Annalie Bolar, Maria DeVictor, Cooper Dirck, Michael Doyle, Harrison Gaunt, Bailee Guymon, Bryce Lukehart, Akshat Rathi and Maria Wagner earned the title of commended.

At Shadow Mountain High School, Ashley Hall was a semifinalist while Anne Lednicky and Abigail McLeran were named commended students.

Approximately, 16,000 students were notified they had qualified as a semifinalist in the 65th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

To be considered, semifinalists must advance to finalist standing in the competition. Finalists have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million that will be offered next spring.

Semifinalists will be notified in February 2020 if they are selected as a finalist, a release states.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
