The Notre Dame Preparatory varsity cheer team finished second in the USA Spirit Nationals’ Large Varsity Show Cheer Intermediate division in Anaheim, California.
The Saints’ second-place finish comes after a solid outing in the preliminaries that put them in front of the other finalists heading into the concluding round, according to a press release.
“We were so excited when we heard that we hit a perfect routine in prelims,” NDP senior Emily Roudin, a four-year veteran on the cheer team, said in a prepared statement. “When you’re in first place all the team are coming for you and they are all very competitive.”
Despite the added pressure, the Saints finished the finals behind Clovis North High School from Fresno, California. It is the highest place a cheer team from Notre Dame Prep has earned at the annual national competition in the Anaheim Convention Center. Last year, the Saints place third at the same event.
The Notre Dame Prep cheer team has enjoyed a successful year, winning the AIA Div. II Large Show Cheer Championship earlier this month.
“Our goal going into Nationals was to make it to the finals, and we exceeded that goal,” Miss Roudin said. “We are really proud of what we have accomplished as a team.”
Opened in 2002, Notre Dame Prep is a Catholic diocesan college preparatory high school with a co-ed enrollment of 849 students. The school has received national recognition for the caliber of its academic, arts and athletic programs. The school is at 9701 E. Bell Road in Scottsdale.
