Mesa man suspected of DUI in crash that killed Scottsdale woman

A 58-year-old Scottsdale woman has died from injuries she received in a head-on collision Friday night just north of Hayden and Cactus roads, police said Saturday.

The woman was in a rideshare vehicle along with her 60-year-old husband on their way to friend’s house for a get-together when the crash occurred about 7:10 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30.

Her husband and the rideshare driver Girard Grassi Jr., 56, were taken to a hospital in serious condition but are expected to survive, police said.

The woman died at a trauma center, according to authorities. The couple’s names are being withheld until all notification can be made.

A 48-year-old Mesa man was the only person in the other vehicle, which was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Hayden Road when the collision occurred, police said.

Police said he was investigated for impairment and eventually placed under arrest for suspicion of DUI. He was admitted to the hospital overnight and was in the hospital Saturday afternoon.

Scottsdale police said he has not been formally booked or charged with any crime “but will likely face charges, including manslaughter, two counts of aggravated assault, endangerment and aggravated DUI. His name will be released once he is booked or seen by a judge, police said.

The roadway was closed for approximately seven hours following the crash.

“Driving impaired is 100% preventable, and the consequences can be devastating and tragic to others or to you,” police said in a release.

“If your weekend and holiday plans involve drinking alcohol or using other substances, please plan ahead to designate a sober driver, preplan and use a rideshare service or get a taxi.”

The East Valley Holiday DUI Task Force is operating through this weekend.
