Meet the Artist: Learn silk screen printing from Arizona artist Eli Richard

Name: Eli Richard
Where I live: Tempe, AZ
What I create: Sculptures, digital drawing and screen prints.
What inspired me to become an artist: My first year at Chico State I took an introduction to printmaking course and was exposed to the process of screen printing. I was instantly hooked.
My involvement in this year’s Canal Convergence: I am leading a live screen printing workshop at the event, where visitors can learn how to print. I also have a series of solar-powered lantern sculptures displayed with Local Light.
What I’m most looking forward to regarding this year’s event: I really enjoy getting to watch the public interact with public art and local artists.
Challenges of living/creating your art: The biggest challenge is carving out time. I have a full-time job in graphic design and a 2-year-old daughter, so time is limited.
Other activities I enjoy: Spending time with my family and making furniture.
If I had four hours with absolutely nothing to do on a Saturday, here’s how I would spend it: Take a nap, watch movie and cook a good meal.
My No. 1 suggestion to new artists: Build your community and participate!
Canal Convergence | Water + Art + Light is a free, 10-day, public art event from Nov. 8–17, at the Scottsdale Waterfront.
This year’s event follows the theme of “The Story of Water” and will feature numerous large-scale, light-based installations, many of which will have interactive components.
In addition to the artworks, Canal Convergence features live performances, food vendors, a beer and wine garden, educational artist talks and all-ages workshops and activities throughout the event.
