Rosenberg: SUSD's Menzel not what legislators claim

Posted

My children attended SUSD schools, and now I have grandchildren attending SUSD schools. I myself was an educator for 35 years, 33 of those here in Arizona.

If you have also lived in SUSD for many years, you are aware of our spotty record regarding school superintendents. At times having to pay an individual even after that individual had been removed from the position of superintendent.

That is why I am so pleased that we currently have a wonderful superintendent, Dr. Menzel, and why I am both concerned and in disbelief that the legislators of LD3 have called for his removal, claiming he is a racist. (LD3 is not the only district that is part of SUSD, and no other district has joined them publicly in this request)

I have read the transcript of the interview from which they base their claim. The cited words were taken out of context. I do not want a racist as our superintendent, and not only does the actual interview exonerate him of this claim, it proves the opposite. He is definitely not a
racist.

The interview was from 2019 - when he was still in Michigan, and not yet the superintendent of SUSD). And having read the transcript, I find it very hard to see how the legislators of LD3 came to their conclusion.

Additionally, they did not cite any actions since he has been or before he was our superintendent that would necessitate his removal. Had there been any, I think they would have been included to strengthen the argument.

I hope fact and logic prevail, and that our district continues to benefit from having Dr. Menzel as our superintendent.
