Janik: Housing trends illustrate welcome news for Scottsdale

Posted

The Commerce Department reported on Friday, July 17, housing starts were up 17.3% in June. We have not seen this since October 2016.

While still below February 2020, this is a strong indicator of a rebound.

The increase reflects “a rising demand for housing in suburbs and rural areas as companies allow employees to work from home during the COVID-19 Pandemic” according to a report by Reuters. A recent survey showed optimism among homebuilders in the single family home market.

This interest is focused on small metro areas, rural areas and large metro suburbs. Scottsdale fits the bill.

It is projected that builders will pivot away from multi-family, high rise, high density construction projects as a result of the COVID pandemic. Expectations are that urban flight will become a longer lasting trend as I predicted several months ago.

This is welcome news for Scottsdale.

Let’s save our city from unwelcome construction that obstructs our views, diminishes our open space, and snarls traffic on our roadways.

As a member of City Council 2020, I will fight for you to keep Scottsdale special. I will work to stop runaway zoning changes that result in projects that are unwelcome and hurt out quality of life.

I will work as hard for this as I did for nearly three years to Protect Our Preserve from commercial development. Vote Betty Janik as a citizen friendly candidate to be a voice for YOU!

Editor’s Note: Betty Janik is a candidate for Scottsdale City Council in the Aug. 4 primary election.
