Investigation continues following accident at Scottsdale Airport

Feb. 10 crash left one dead, several injured

The City of Scottsdale offered an update Thursday morning, Feb. 13, concerning an accident at Scottsdale Airport that left one dead and several injured.

“The accident occurred at 2:39 p.m. when a private jet appears to have suffered a mechanical failure upon landing, veered off the runway and struck another aircraft which was parked near a private hangar adjacent to the runway,” according to the release.

Airport operations staff and emergency responders acted swiftly to render aid to those involved in the accident and secure the scene, the release continued. The runway was closed for approximately six hours.

It was earlier reported the accident involved an aircraft owned by Motley Crue singer Vince Neil, though Neil was not on the plane at the time.

Two pilots and two passengers were on the plane owned by Neil, a Learjet 35A, according to a statement by Neil’s attorney on the band’s Facebook page.

“Mr. Neil’s thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved, and he is grateful for the critical aid of all first responders assisting today,” the statement said.

Scottsdale Airport re-opened the runway at 8:38 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, and operations continued normally afterward. The primary aircraft involved has been removed by NTSB investigators for further examination, the release explained.

“The Scottsdale Airport team appreciates the support of the aviation community and the public during the response and the continuing investigation,” the release stated.

More than 166,000 aircraft operations occurred at Scottsdale Airport in 2024, making it one of the busiest single-runway general aviation airports in the nation, according to the release.

“While incidents like this are rare, it is a reminder that safety is always the top airport priority,” the release stated. “Scottsdale Airport extends sincere gratitude to the first responders, and local agencies for their professionalism and support during this incident and for being part of the team which helps the airport serve the aviation community each day as safely as possible."

Further details regarding the cause of the accident will be released by the NTSB when they are available.

Following the accident, one individual was reported dead and two people were taken to the hospital in critical condition. Another was taken to a hospital but was listed in stable condition the day of the accident, according to Scottsdale Fire Department Capt. Dave Folio. A fifth person refused treatment.

Scottsdale Mayor Lisa Borowsky released a statement following the accident.

“On behalf of the city of Scottsdale, we offer our deepest condolences to those involved in the accident and for those who have been taken to our trauma center for treatment,” Borowsky said in the release. “We will keep all affected by this tragedy in our prayers. I would also like to thank our first responder community for their quick action and service in this situation.”
