Hohokam Elementary School asks for donations for new biking program

Program targeted for kindergarten students to learn how to ride a bike

Kindergartners at Hohokam Elementary School may soon be riding bikes in their P.E. classes.

All Kids Bike is a national program on a mission to teach every child in America how to ride a bike. They are currently working to bring the All Kids Bike kindergarten P.E. program to Hohokam Elementary School, according to a press release.

The program equips schools with everything they need to teach children how to ride; teacher training and certification, a structured 8-lesson curriculum, a fleet of Strider 14x bikes, pedal conversion kits, fully-adjustable helmets and a five-year support plan, the release explained.

Launched in March 2018, there are already 645 schools in 50 states with All Kids Bike kindergarten P.E. programs.

P.E. teacher, Carmen Simpson, who applied for the program, spoke of the benefits of creating an All Kids Bike program at Hohokam in the release.

“All Kids Bike would provide ample opportunities for Hohokam students,” Simpson stated. “Our school is a Title 1 school that serves a diverse socio-economic population. This program would teach them perseverance, balance, gross motor skills, healthy lifestyle activities and transportation life skills. This would give students the opportunity to learn to ride a bike that they may not otherwise have access to ride. It is a fun activity that creates a healthy lifestyle and life skills.”

The kindergarten P.E. program is designed for children of all abilities and hopes to instill healthy habits at a young age.

“One of the best ways to get kids active is to get them excited about bicycles,” All Kids Bike board member Ryan McFarland stated in the release. “It’s a skill that is going to serve them in life.”
