I agree with Dr. Hart-Wells’ plea to reject out-of-state influence in our SUSD School Board election. She focuses on political action committees which cannot coordinate with candidates, however, she neglects to mention out-of-state donations to candidates which can be rejected.
Ironically, Dr. Hart-Wells endorses candidates most directly influenced by out-of-state money.
Dr. Pittinsky has received over $14,000 – more than one third of his bankroll, more than all other candidates combined – from out-of-state influence. Mr. Sharkey is the second highest. Along with Lewis, they have raised nearly $19,000 from out-of-state sources – 86% of all out-of-state funds for this race.
Jacobs, Beasley and Hassler report an order of magnitude less out-of-state donations. Impressively, Drew Hassler has reported no out-of-state influence. Jeanne Beasley, only $200. These three are our true local, community choices.
Candidates can’t control PAC actions but have the prerogative to reject donations to their campaigns. Follow Dr. Hart-Wells’ lead by rejecting candidates who are truly influenced by out-of-state money.
