Scottsdale’s Transportation and Streets Department recently commenced work on a city-wide Transportation Safety Plan. As the former chair of the Transportation Commission, including a six-year tenure, I applaud this effort and encourage the community to join the public process.
The Transportation Safety Plan is a powerful way to prioritize safety improvements and justify investment decisions. A formal plan also communicates more clearly with stakeholders. As such, the development of Scottsdale’s Transportation Safety Plan is an opportunity for residents and business owners to evaluate the current transportation system and provide input on strategies to reduce fatal and serious-injury crashes.
At January’s Transportation Commission meeting Nathan Domme, the city’s Transportation Planning Manager, presented an overview of the plan’s public involvement and citizen engagement opportunities, including interactive bicycle, pedestrian and motorist evaluations of city roadways. A project-specific website is under development and public meetings will be held over the next twelve months.
The city’s Transportation and Streets department defines safety as a shared responsibility; the plan will include elements that support network improvements and proactive programs and strategies to enhance road safety. Individual elements of the plan will be presented to the Transportation Commission over their next eight meetings for discussion and feedback. The public is invited to attend these meetings to learn more about the proposed plan elements, including community education and execution of plan recommendations.
The city-council-appointed members of Scottsdale’s Transportation Commission include representatives from ADOT’s Traffic Safety Division, nationwide private transportation planning and engineering firms and transportation planning specialists from neighboring municipalities. The seven-member commission works alongside the community, city staff and elected officials to recommend best practices for the city’s transportation network. These individuals know the value of the Transportation Safety Plan and are dedicating their efforts to meeting the plan’s goals.
I hope you will join me and be a part of this important discussion.
