DST Presents: ‘A Christmas Story The Play,’ Nov. 29-Dec. 22

Desert Stages Theatre announces the opening of the holiday tale, “A Christmas Story the Play” on Saturday, Nov. 29 at Scottsdale Fashion Square.

Based on the classic American 1983 motion picture of the same title – written by Jean Shepherd, Leigh Brown and Bob Clark as well as Jean Shepherd’s novel “In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash” – humorist Jean Shepherd’s memoir of growing up in the midwest in the 1940s follows nine-year-old Ralphie Parker in his quest for a genuine Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas.

The play shows how Ralphie pleads his case before his mother, his teacher and even Santa Claus, but receives the consistent response, “You’ll shoot your eye out!”

All the elements from the motion picture are present, including the family’s exploding furnace, Scut Farkas, the school bully, the boys’ experiment with a wet tongue on a cold lamppost, the Little Orphan Annie decoder pin, Ralphie’s father winning a lamp shaped like a woman’s leg in a net stocking and more, according to a press release.

The Desert Stages Theatre production is directed by Chris Chávez who recently directed the show “Chicago (High School Edition)” in Cullity Hall this past fall.

Performances will run from Nov. 29 to Dec. 22; with shows at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sundays with additional show times at 2 p.m. on Dec. 7; and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 17-19.
