Dr. Scott Gerrish divides time between coasts, family

Dr. Scott Gerrish of Paradise Valley sculpts his engineering and medical knowledge into a weighty business he provides coast to coast.

Scottsdale’s newest medspa IYA Med owner travels to and from his East Coast practice weekly. Dr. Gerrish --- who owns Gerrish MedEsthetics in Vienna, Virginia --- has an extensive background in noninvasive to minimally invasive procedures.

Dr. Gerrish, who developed his talent for enhancing appearances, started his practice in Virginia and, after honing his craft on the East Coast, brought his talents to the West Coast, seeing patients in Arizona.

Despite the routine, weekly bicoastal travels, Dr. Gerrish maintains his work-life balance as he makes time for his family.

He even took time to answer some questions for the Independent about how he manages to be in two places on two coasts.

Where are you originally from and how long have you been a Paradise Valley resident?

I was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, and my family and I have lived in northern Virginia, just outside of Washington, DC for the last 18 years. We just moved to Paradise Valley in June of this year.

What does your family consist of, ie: spouse, kids, pets, etc.?

My wife and I have two children. Our son is 15 and our daughter just turned 13. We also have three dogs, two English Shepherds, and one Cavachon.

How much time can actually be spent with the family if constantly traveling between time zones?

I will go to the Virginia office for three or four days every other week. This allows me to spend time with my family every weekend and alternating weeks. In reality, so many individuals travel once or twice a month for their work. I look at the travel to the Virginia office as being very similar.

Which is your preferred airline?

United Airlines is my go-to airline and Marriott is my hotel of choice. On the weeks I go to Virginia, I will usually leave Phoenix on a Monday morning and return on that Friday night. Because I have been doing this same schedule for a while, I’m starting to see some familiar faces on the flights; both flight attendants and passengers.

What made you choose AZ for another location for your practice?

My partner at IYA is a close friend that I went to medical school with almost 30 years ago. We’ve talked many times about combining our skills under one practice but the timing and location were never right...until now.

The friendliness of the people in Arizona and the weather/healthy outdoor living here has always been a major draw for me and my family. It certainly doesn’t hurt that my wife is a Sun Devil and has always wanted to return to the only place that she would say “feels like home.”

Is it hard to keep up with your schedule and what do you do to make that work?

I have always been able to keep my schedule in my head and know when and where I needed to be. Now, with the two offices, I have found that utilizing the scheduler on my iPhone has worked well to keep me organized and on time.

How do you maintain a work-life balance?

Maintaining that balance between work and life is a constant challenge. For me, it’s the transitioning from work to life that is the hardest. Constantly focusing on being present and in-the-moment has been a tremendous help.

How do you manage your two businesses across the country?

Ultimately it comes down to the great staff I have at both locations. Their hard work and dedication are what lead both offices to run smoothly and ensures the highest quality of service and customer care.

Describe an average day/week for you?

A typical work week consists of seeing both new and existing patients in my office. I oversee all patient treatment planning, as well as treatment delivery. Additionally, I will have calls with laser companies regarding my experiences with protocol adjustments using their medical devices. Once a month I will typically host a manufacturer-sponsored training seminar at IYA teaching advanced techniques on lasers and devices to both local and traveling medical professionals.

Lastly, as the East Coast CoolSculpting University medical director, I oversee the comprehensive programs at the training center that teaches medical professionals from around the world the latest techniques and best CoolSculpting practices. On the weekends, my time is spent going to my son’s baseball games and my daughter’s volleyball games, and when possible, a much-anticipated date night with my wife.

Anything else interesting about yourself or your business that you would like to share with readers?

My undergraduate degree is from Lehigh University in engineering. Combining my medical training with my engineering background has allowed me to work with leading laser manufacturers in developing new technology and perfecting treatment protocols. Both the CoolSculpting “Treatment to Transformation” and the miraDry Fresh protocol are examples of my work to improve treatment results and patient experiences.
