Coward: Sen. Townsend legislative action or inaction?

Posted

Our own Sen. Kelly Townsend (R-District 16) has sponsored a resolution (SCR1010) that asks voters to amend the Arizona Constitution to require the legislature to go into a special session for the duration of any declaration of emergency.

Can you imagine the prolonged fighting that would have ensued on the floor — all while we paid every lawmaker a daily allowance for being in session? I thought GOP legislators only reduced the powers of Democratic governors. But then again I guess after this weekend’s tantrum in the GOP reorganization meeting they censored Gov. Ducey, so she doesn’t figure he’s a real Republican any longer.

Maybe Sen. Townsend should think about tackling some real issues like following public health guidelines to mitigate a runaway pandemic, where Arizona is leading the pack, and figuring out how to get vaccines into the arms of her constituents. Getting ahead of the curve with this virus would go a long way to getting our students into classrooms and our economy back on track.

Fighting these losing battles with the governor is pointless and a waste of time. Especially when there are about four other resolutions trying to do the same thing.
