For the past 15 years, many civic-minded junior and senior high schoolers have spent their summers working a paid internship as part of Bank of America’s Student Leaders program.
The Student Leaders program, which began in 2004, was created to provide young people with an opportunity to build their workforce, civic, and leadership skills by working at a local nonprofit and attending a week-long leadership summit in Washington DC, according to a press release.
Last summer, five local teens were selected for the program --- with each of them brought their passion for community involvement to Boys & Girls Clubs around the Valley through paid internships --- and met up with fellow student leaders from around the country at the leadership summit.
Cameron Deal, a senior at Sunrise Mountain High School, was inspired by his summer experience as a student leader intern at the Boys & Girls Club of Peoria to create a new program called The Music Makers Project, obtaining a seed grant that he says will enable the project to purchase a variety of beginner instruments so that the kids can begin long-term relationships with music.
“This program works to increase access to music for under-resourced children,” Mr. Deal said in a prepared statement.
“The initiative is hosted at the Boys & Girls Club of Peoria, Arizona and brings in local high school musicians to present and perform on their instruments. This offers an opportunity for the children to interact with and explore a variety of instruments, hopefully igniting long and rich musical lives for those who would otherwise not have the opportunity to explore this area of the arts.”
Participants selected for the Student Leader Program will participate in an eight-week paid internship at a Boys & Girls Club branch in the greater Phoenix area, where they will have the opportunity to learn first-hand about community and the critical role nonprofits play.
They will also learn valuable civic, social and business leadership skills and attend a Student Leaders Summit held in Washington D.C. where they will learn how government, business and the nonprofit sector work together to address critical community needs.
To become a student leader, applicants must meet the following requirements:
Be a junior or senior in high school

Be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship through the end of September 2020
Be able to participate in a week-long Student Leaders Summit in Washington DC (All expenses paid. This week in summer of 2020 will be part of your eight-week experience.)
Be a student in good standing at your school
Obtain a letter of recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor, or school administrator
Complete and submit an application
