Assault at Scottsdale park could be hate crime

The Scottsdale Police Department is asking for the public’s help with information about an assault at a local park.

The incident happened around 10:30-11 p.m. June 28 at Cactus Park, 7202 E. Cactus Road.

Scottsdale police said Oscar Goodman was assaulted at the park by multiple people.

"Unfortunately, due to his injuries he has very little recollection of the event at this time," police stated in a release. "There have been reports that he was assaulted by multiple subjects and that it was possibly a racially motivated biased crime. Much of which has been widely circulated on social media. At this point in the investigation there is not enough evidence to confirm or deny these reports."

However, police said Mr. Goodman has significant injuries, and they are asking for the public to call the department at 480-312-5000 with any information on the case.

According to a GoFundMe for Mr. Goodman, he was playing basketball at the park when four white males came from behind and attacked him screaming, "White pride." Mr. Goodman suffered kicks to the face and chest, resulting in a jaw fracture in multiple places, broken ribs, and a lacerated chin, the GoFundMe states.

The GoFundMe states Mr. Goodman was recently released from the hospital but will accrue thousands of dollars in medical bills and will have to be off from work for multiple months. The account has raised over $34,000 as of Monday, July 6.
