Artist demonstrations, jazz performances slated at Marshall Gallery

The Marshall Gallery has scheduled two upcoming events for December, featuring an artist demonstration and holiday music by a local jazz collective. During the next monthly Art Walk, on Thursday, Dec. 12, artist Frank Balaam will be demonstrating his unique painting style and meeting with patrons at Marshall Gallery. Mr. Balaam will be at Marshall Gallery, 7106 E. Main St., from 7 to 9 p.m. A descendant of a prominent English artist, Mr. Balaam attended Blackpool and Edinburgh colleges of Fine Arts in the United Kingdom, according to a press release. His classical training in the arts and a lifetime’s experience painting murals, landscapes and figurative works culminated in his newest series: creative forests that radiate with the energy of life. His passion is oil paint with thick brushstrokes, loaded with pigment, which create the flamboyant interaction of color. Mr. Balaam adopts a “reverse painting” technique to imbue the light in his forests with substance instead of merely being a backdrop, the press release stated. First, he paints the immediate foreground, and then progresses through mid-ground, before going into the distant with pure light bursting through the leaves and branches. The Old Town Scottsdale gallery will also host The Adam J. Johnson Jazz Collective 7-9 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14. Patrons are invited to an evening of merriment with their holiday favorites. This all-American music group was formed by New York City jazz saxophonist Adam J. Johnson. Based in the Valley, the jazz collective enjoys composing, arranging, conducting and overall, just making music together. To attend the musical evening, RSVP to email@themarshallgallery.com or call 480-970-3111 by Dec. 13. There is a $25 admittance fee to include wine and cheese after the performance.
