Census notices will begin arriving in Scottsdale mailboxes March 12 --- a key point in the once-a-decade process to count everyone in the United States.
Data collected via the short questionnaire affects more than $20 billion in funding annually for Arizona, according to a press release, and responding in Scottsdale helps the community receive its fair share.
The city also uses census data to plan services and projects, and to place facilities like fire stations, parks and community centers where they will be most effective.
What should I know about completing the census?
You have three different choices to complete the census questionnaire.
Respond in the method you’re most comfortable with --- online, by phone or on paper.
The census will not come in the form of an unsolicited email and it won’t ask for money.
Is it safe to complete my questionnaire online?
The 2020 Census website is safe and secure. Regardless of how you respond, the Census Bureau is bound by federal law to protect your information.
How long will it take to complete the form?
Filling out the census form should only take a few minutes --- the long forms are long gone. There are fewer than 10 questions covering things like age, gender, race and household living arrangements.
Where can I find free internet access to complete my census?
Starting March 16, you can stop by one of Scottsdale’s census assistance centers to complete your online questionnaire. Assistance centers will be located at all Scottsdale library branches, Via Linda and Granite Reef senior centers, as well as Paiute and Vista del Camino community centers.
What about part-time residents?
If you don’t live in Scottsdale year-round, you should report your U.S. residency wherever you live and sleep most of the time --- even if you are a citizen of a foreign country. If you aren’t sure, report your residency where you are on April 1.
When do I have to respond?
You are encouraged to respond by April 30. Starting in May, the Census Bureau will begin follow-ups at households who haven’t responded. All census responses need to be received no later than July 31.
When will we know the results?
The Census Bureau must deliver a report to the president by Dec. 31. Local details will be released beginning in March 2021.
