Rittenhouse Road closure extended to Aug. 21

Posted

Rittenhouse Road will be closed until Aug. 21 to widen the bridge over the Queen Creek Wash.

The roadway was originally scheduled to open in mid-July, but would require three additional closures later in the project, including the widening of the railroad spur crossing, a waterline bore and intersection realignment at Cloud Road, according to a release.

In an effort to consolidate the amount of time drivers are affected by construction, the closure is now extended to Aug. 21 with the distance of the closure extending from Riggs Road to Creekside Drive.

The extended closure accommodates an accelerated schedule by the Union Pacific Railroad for the spur crossing. Extending the closure reduces the overall construction timeframe by approximately one month, with the project completion anticipated prior to the Christmas holiday, and eliminates the need for future closures, the release states.

The timing of the closure coincides with Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey’s executive order to delay the start of in-person school to Aug. 17 and overall reduced traffic in Queen Creek and the region.

During the closure, the roadway in the closed area will be removed and reconstructed, which includes mass grading, subgrade prep, pavement installation, curb, gutter, and sidewalk. The full closure continues to increase construction productivity, increase safety for workers and motorists, and minimize traffic interruptions.

The Rittenhouse Road project involves widening the roadway to two lanes in each direction from 213th Street to Riggs Road, making Rittenhouse Road four lanes throughout Queen Creek. Additional elements of the project include right turn lanes at intersections, bike lanes, intersection upgrades – including realigning the Cloud Road intersection, utility upgrades and widening the spur crossing north of Riggs Road, the release states.

As roadway improvements continue, slow down, allow extra time for travel and be courteous of motorists and work crews. To receive weekly traffic alerts, sign up for eNotifications on the town’s website.
