Queen Creek girl, 5, wins OdySea art challenge

Posted

A 5-year-old girl from Queen Creek is one of five winners in the OdySea Aquarium’s Fourth Annual Conservation Art Challenge.

Nini Guerrero used cardboard, paper, an egg cage and a juice bottle to create her interpretation of a gray-headed albatross.

Nini’s brother, Sam, was one of the five winners in the 2023 contest and the children’s parents said the art challenge has become a much-anticipated summer activity for the whole family.

“The family goes together to the library to research their animals and learn about their habitat and environment before creating their work of art,” a press release from OdySea Aquarium stated. “OdySea Aquarium commends Nini for her understanding of the significance of keeping the environment and wildlife safe.”

The aquarium’s art challenge is part of the “Party for the Planet” initiatives with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and is the largest combined Earth Day, Endangered Species Day and World Oceans Day celebration in North America, the release continued.

OdySea encourages children ages 12 and under to research and create a land, sea or sky animal using recycled materials. Every participant receives a free child’s admission ticket to OdySea.

Nini and her immediate family were also invited to the aquarium for a celebration honoring the top five winners, and all the winners received a painting created by an OdySea Aquarium penguin, otter or sea lion.

As an added surprise, the winners were given the exclusive opportunity to feed and touch cownose stingrays at QdySea’s Stingray Bay.

Over the past four years, OdySea stated that the contest has “attracted thousands of young artists from across the Valley, showcasing a diverse array of masterpieces in all shapes and sizes.”

This year, the challenge received a record-breaking 933 entries, the release stated.

OdySea Aquarium is located in Scottsdale at 9500 E. Via De Ventura, Suite A-100 on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
