The Queen Creek Unified School District’s newest elementary school has reached another milestone in its construction.
The exterior color finish for Mountain Trail Academy, which is located in Mesa, is 75% complete, according to the district.
“Inside the administration building, tape, texture and painting are well underway,” QCUSD stated.
Mountain Trail Academy, 5626 S. Mountain Road, is the district’s 10th elementary school and it is set to open in July. Construction on the 90,000-square-foot facility started in May.
The school’s principal is Erin Pillsbury and its mascot is the Skyhawks.
The facility will be the district's second STEAM- (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) focused school and will serve students from kindergarten through sixth grade.
The construction and acquisition of the school are being funded by money awarded from the state School Facilities Division, which requires an extensive qualification process and is calculated based on schools approaching their capacity. Limited funding is allocated by the state over the course of two years.
Features of the school include:
- 38 classrooms and open collaboration spaces
- A science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) lab
- Media/technology center
- Music and orchestra rooms
- Multipurpose room with a performance platform
- Three play areas and a playground
- A full-service kitchen
Mountain Trail Academy will also offer free all-day kindergarten, before-and-after-school enrichment classes, and programs in physical education, music and computer science.
