Meet Your Neighbor: William Amistad a family nurse practitioner

Your Name: William B. Amistad Jr.

Business Name: Amistad Clinic, internal medicine.

Town/Neighborhood: Queen Creek

Hours of operation: Queen Creek clinic, 18914 E. San Tan Blvd. Suite 101; Thursday and Friday clinic appointments 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; telemedicine available Monday-Friday.

Personal background highlights: I’m someone who loves the great outdoors, whether it is hiking or getting to the beach or even those rare moments when I can get a kayak out on the lake. I love to travel and the precious time I get to spend with my family and friends is golden.

Professional background highlights: I began my career in the Philippines where I worked long hours in a furniture store to pay for my nursing education. After I graduated and passed my boards, I was offered a faculty position in the nursing program at my university. I moved to the U.S. in my early 20s when I was offered a registered nurse position with a skilled nursing facility in Chicago, Illinois. My career blossomed into leadership opportunities when I became a director of nursing at one of the homes I served. My passion for helping others and diversifying my skills led me to work in emergency departments where I could help patients and their families in their most vulnerable moments. I achieved several advanced nursing certifications and went on to work in a level one trauma center here in the East Valley. My insatiable appetite for education drove me to achieve my master of science in nursing and become a family nurse practitioner. I served as a hospitalist for a regional medical center and then joined an internal medicine practice in Yuma.

What I do: I am a board-certified family nurse practitioner focusing on internal medicine in a private practice, primary care setting.

What I like most about doing business here: I moved to Queen Creek eight years ago and I’m in love with the beauty of this area. I’m looking forward to building great relationships with my patients here.

Changes I’d like to see in this area: I would like to increase and educate the greater community on things they can do to improve their own health. Queen Creek is already on the right path by offering so many outdoor activities to stay physically active.

What am I promoting: Healthy lifestyle modifications. There are many choices we can make every day to decrease the chances of developing a chronic disease.

What I’m excited about and why: I’m excited about making a positive difference in the health of each patient I serve because I enjoy seeing them get the most out of life.

Favorite community cause and why: The prevention and treatment of HIV. Over my 29 years in healthcare, I have seen HIV go from a stigmatized taboo topic and patients dehumanized, to treatment and community action to reduce if not nearly eliminate the spread of HIV. I am and will continue to be part of this solution.

When and why I started my business/employment here: Many medical practices are consumed by increasing their patient load to impact their revenue. In short, this creates an imbalance in care for both the medical provider and patient. I felt strongly that in order for me to achieve the desired level of patient care I wanted to deliver, I needed to open my own private practice where I could create time to construct care plans that works uniquely for the patient, and better understand the patient as a person.

Where was before and why I left: I really haven’t left, it’s really a homecoming.

My family: I am happily married and grateful to be a dog parent to a 14-year-old Puggle and an 8-year-old Westie-Terrier mix.

My interests and hobbies: The kitchen is my domain and I love to cook. When I’m not cooking, I’m hiking and at the gym to work off everything I just ate. I love reworking the old Filipino recipes to create healthier, and perhaps even tastier, versions of them for the palate.
