Maple: Feds must do more for homeless people

Posted

I totally agree that we have a real problem of vagrants in and around Sun City and that they are causing the crime rate to escalate. Just how we can help them to help themselves is the real problem.

First, we should stop giving them money directly as that only encourages them to hang around more. Giving your money to various churches, charities and food banks make a whole lot more sense.

I am compassionate, just like many other Sun City residents, and would like to see many of them get on their feet and become good and responsible citizens. The hard question is just how can that happen?

Since this is a problem all over the country, it is my belief that our Federally elected officials could and should work together to come up with federal housing, education and to encourage employment instead of all the handouts.

We all know that there are many businesses really hurting for help and can’t find any. There are many churches that want to help and food banks that offer free food. Many of these vagrants are just lazy and the free stuff from the Government only encourages their continued lack of looking for employment.

Yes there are those that are drug addicts and some are mentally incapable of seeking and keeping a job, it is this group that could be helped by the federal government. This is where the feds could better spend their money on. Better housing and positive programs for the lazy and the addicted. Better housing and programs for those troubled with mental problems.

This problem is only getting worse by the day. We need think tanks to come up with better solutions and sooner the better. We are the best and most compassionate country in the world and it is time we start acting like it.

Quit dolling out millions of our money to other countries that hate us and spend it here at home.
