Manross: Sen. Kelly has been prevaricating on filibuster issue

Posted

Attention Sen. Kelly: To say you are a disappointment as our senator is an understatement. I was a supporter of your wife while she was in Congress. She showed courage, took strong stands on policy and was transparent about where she stood on important issues. You have displayed none of those characteristics.

As a veteran like yourself, I had high hopes that you would be an independent thinker when you were elected.

I was disappointed when during the election you refused to directly answer questions about key issues like the Senate filibuster rule, which is so crucial to the legislative role the Senate plays in our nation.

For over 100 years, the Senate has operated with a filibuster rule. The role of the Senate is to fully consider, debate and reach compromise on issues rather than trying to force the legislative priorities of any particular party. Debate on bills should be bipartisan.

That means taking into account the views and concerns of all Americans, not just those in the majority party. That creates better public policy. This is why the filibuster rule exists.

Your own Majority Leader, Chuck Schumer, spoke out strongly against eliminating the filibuster in the recent past and has now totally flip-flopped. Today, senator, you announced that you would not support keeping the filibuster rule. Very disappointing!

Today you revealed why you would not answer the question when you were a candidate. Clearly you were concerned it would negatively impact your election chances.

The state of Arizona has a history of electing some outstanding senators who have been transparent, bold and willing to defend our constitutional, democratic republic.
