Sextortion, sex trafficking and how parents can protect their children will be discussed during a special presentation by the Rotary Club of Queen Creek on Thursday.
The event marks the third installment of the club's series, “Raising Resilient Kids, ”which focuses on mental health issues affecting area youth.
The free event startsd as 6:30 p.m. at the Queen Creek Community Chambers/Law Enforcement Building, 20727 E. Civic Parkway. Seating is limited so those interested in attending must register at https://rotaryclubqc.com/events/.
Parents will learn common ways predators take advantage of youngsters, red flags associated with sextortion, sex trafficking and other dangers, and how to talk to youth about making decisions that will keep them safe, a press release stated.
Featured presenters include Det. Sgt. Lauren Wallace of the Queen Creek Police Department, Katey McPherson of Bark for Schools and Queen Creek Vice Mayor Leah Martineau with the Arizona Anti-Trafficking Network.
"Our community continues, like many, to be faced with the challenging issues of coping and resilience amongst our youth. So many are thriving but there are some that need more support and a front loading of preventative strategies to bolster their self-worth, self-advocacy, and agency so that they can take flight. I am honored to have the opportunity to partner with QC Rotary as we tackle these challenges head on,” McPherson stated in the release.
A variety of organizations dedicated to youth mental wellness and resilience will also be on hand, providing community members with an opportunity to meet representatives from groups that offer coaching, counseling and therapy to families in need.
“The goal of the parent night event is to provide parents with tools and information that help build resilience in teens which will better help them overcome the growing mental health issues that many teens struggle with today,” the release stated.
The Rotary Club of Queen Creek represents business owners, professionals and parents dedicated to improving their community through volunteering.
