CAC student wins national scholarship

Central Arizona College student Robert Serrano is one of 60 community college students throughout the country selected to receive the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship.
Serrano, who is one of two community college students in Arizona to receive the scholarship, attends classes at CAC’s Maricopa campus, according to a press release.
He is majoring in civil engineering and plans to transfer to Arizona State University in the fall to complete his bachelor’s degree and ultimately his Master of Science in Civil Engineering. Serrano’s goals include designing a sustainable city of the future and new highways to solve congestion.
While at CAC, Serrano has served as a Phi Theta Kappa officer, member of Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society and was on the president’s list.
As a Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholar, Serrano will receive educational advising to assist him in the process of transitioning to a four-year college and preparing for his career.
With funding from this scholarship Cooke Scholars are provided an opportunity to complete their education with minimal debt. After all institutional aid and other funding is applied, this last dollar award could provide Serrano with as much as $55,000 a year to complete a bachelor's degree, the release stated.
Other opportunities for scholars include internships, study abroad and graduate school funding, as well as network connections to more than 3,000 Cooke Scholars and alumni.
Student applications were evaluated based on academic ability and achievement, persistence, leadership and financial need. More than 1,700 students from 448 community colleges across the nation applied for this scholarship.
The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation helps promising students in financial need. Since 2000, the foundation has awarded $250 million in scholarships to more than 3,200 students from eighth grade through graduate school, along with counseling and other support services.
The foundation has also provided $125 million in grants to organizations that serve such students.
