Winter: Says voting is indeed our right

Posted

This is a response to Roy Miller’s recent letter (“Says voting a privilege, not a right,” Nov. 19, 2020). I didn’t wish to respond, but there is need to correct his statement of voting is a privilege.

Freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of assembly, freedom to petition government for redress of grievances and freedom to keep and bear arms. These rights are only mentioned once in the Constitution (Bill of Rights), but the right to vote is mentioned five times.

The phrase is first mentioned in the 14th Amendment; then in the 15th Amendment. Specifically of “the right of citizens of the United States to vote.” Don’t forget the 19th Amendment. Of course, the voter needs to be of age, literate, length of residency, prove identity or lack of criminal past.

A side note: Did you know that in 1937 was the first time a president was inaugurated before March. Earlier inaugurations were done in March.

Thank you,
