Somerville: Impeachment necessary to send message

Posted

In a letter to the editor (“Resident not happy with impeach banner”) Ms. Debby Phillips expressed displeasure at seeing a banner that read, “Impeach Trump, Make America Great Again.”

On Jan. 2, Donald Trump called the Secretary of State for the state of Georgia. The audio and written transcript are available online. During the call, Mr. Trump stated a “recalculation” of votes could be performed.

Mr. Trump said, “I just want to find 11,780 votes.” The certification of Georgia’s November election results was completed Dec. 7, 2020, after three recounts had been completed. Mr. Trump wanted the secretary of state to change the results. It would seem this might be reason enough for impeachment.

After the events and comments leading up to and during Jan. 6, it is reasonable to expect the impeachment for incitement of insurrection.

Impeachment was and is necessary even if only to serve as an example for future Presidents.
