A 47-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with allegations she fraudulently charged more than $400,000 in medical costs, authorities said Monday.
Maricopa County Sheriff Office’s financial crimes detectives arrested and booked Shannon Smith on charges that include fraudulent schemes, taking identity of another and fugitive of justice.
Prior to the arrest over the weekend, detectives received information from Phoenix police advising them they found the suspect, and MCSO detectives took custody.
“Smith had a myriad of charges from identity theft to fraudulent schemes in which the victim had been fraudulently charged over $400,000 in medical costs. The suspect also had two (fugitive of justice) warrants for similar crimes in other states,” an MCSO release stated.
The suspect, in a Miranda rights interview, admitted she had received medical care while identifying herself with the victim’s name, according to MCSO.
“In addition to admitting to the charges made at the two hospitals the investigators knew about, she further informed them of other incidents where she had received medical care using the victim’s information,” the release stated.
