A man suspected of firing a handgun at several people died Saturday morning after he was shot while fleeing Phoenix police.
Officers responded about 3:35 a.m. Aug. 10 to 27th Avenue and Van Buren Street after receiving reports of shots being fired. They learned that a man, who has not been identified, confronted several people nearby, fired shots and threatened several individuals with a handgun, according to a release from the Phoenix Police Department.
He left in a vehicle. Police obtained a description of the suspect and the vehicle, which they found near 25th Avenue and Buckeye Road.
The man ran from the vehicle, and officers chased him as he headed east on Buckeye Road, police said, adding the suspect reached toward his waistband. That is when the officer-involved shooting occurred, the release stated.
The man had at least one gunshot would and did not survive, dying at the scene. A firearm was found.
No officers were injured, and an investigation is underway.
