Kvaran: Calls for democracy, not division

Posted

Rich Andrews’ latest letter to the editor (“Hopes for close election, more division,” Daily Independent, Oct. 22, 2020) was horrifying to me. Not only does Andrews clearly feel that the American people should not pick the president, that it should be done by the Electoral College; but that in fact it should best not be done by the EC but by the Supreme Court.

He is confident that Justice Barrett will ignore all the legal issues involved in whatever the specific case is and will vote for Trump.

And all this so that he can enjoy the “weeping and gnashing of teeth” by the so-called left. “Music to my ears,” he calls it.

Is this really what we want for America? Four more years of minority rule made particularly thrilling because of the pain it causes others? I have heard, both on TV and from my Republican friends, that, “The United States is not a democracy, it is a republic.” Right, like the People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) or the People’s Republic of China (Communist China) or perhaps the Republic of Albania?

Is this the company we want to be in? Why would Mr. Andrews not just want his candidate to win a nice clear-cut victory? I guess because where is the suffering and stress in that?

The Electoral College is a relic left over from the days of slavery, set up so that the slave states could have an inflated say as to who the president would be. This is why five out of our first seven presidents were from slave states.

This relic should meet the same fate as the statues of Nathan Bedford Forrest.
