ICE raids in Arizona deserve protests

Posted

Some people have made dishonest, disgraceful and disgusting comments when voicing their support of recent ICE raids in Arizona, justifying the tragedies by saying, “Don’t be here illegally.”

First, anyone who knows the history of laws admits that what is legal is not always right, and what is right is not always legal. Further, those targeted by ICE — no matter what is said of them — are people. They are people who share love with those around them, who care for their friends through hardships, who at the end of a hard workday just want something to eat and to rest.

This is not me trying to humanize anyone. This is me reminding ICE supporters that immigrants are people and that alone should mean that they do not deserve to live in fear.

We must continue protesting these raids to signify to the state and the country at large that the raids are wrong and to impede them as much as possible.

If you agree but hesitate, consider these words from Christopher Hitchens in his work “Letters to a Young Contrarian” — “Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity. Seek argument and disputation for its own sake; the grave will supply enough time for silence.”
