Goncalves: Rejects concerns over USPS

Posted

In her recent letter to the editor, Carolyn Oddo is panicking because she thinks President Trump is trying to defund the postal service to affect mail-in voting (“Says seniors must defend the USPS,” Daily Independent, Aug. 18, 2020). Untrue!

The fact is USPS has enough money to last through the year 2021. It has been running on deficits for many years — it is nothing new.

President Trump appointed Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, who has been making changes at the agency to ensure its long-term sustainability. These changes will not hinder the collection of mail-in ballots.

Carolyn mentions she votes by mail and has done so for 20 years. Yes, many seniors do that, but please understand there is a difference between absentee ballots where the person has to request one and has to show proof, and all mail-in balloting where states send ballots to all registered voters.

Many times these people have moved or passed away and it leaves the possibility of someone fraudulently using it. There have been many cases of ballot theft and abuse.

Voting for our president and our elected representatives is a God-given right, and everything should be done to make sure it is done correctly.
