Elliott: Should Trump get more credit for reopening?

Posted

Rarely have I read a more disingenuous, politically driven, ungrateful and misleading article than the recent commentary by Kathy Hoffman (“Biden-led return to normalcy just what students need,” Daily Independent, July 1, 2021.)

The article gives 100% credit to the Biden Administration, mostly to President Biden himself, for all the progress made in getting schools opened and students back in schools during the current year. Such statements as, “When the pandemic hit, the Trump administration failed our students at every level.” There is absolutely no support for such an accusation. What could any administration have done when the crippling COVID-19 virus shut down everything but essential activity that had to function?

Ms. Hoffman would have to have been under a rock to not know the impossibility surrounding the unknowns of the virus. And as superintendent of Arizona schools, she of all people should know better than to make such a statement.

Furthermore, she gave no credit for President Trump pushing the development of a vaccine through Project Warp Speed to develop a vaccine in record times. Ms. Hoffman is not alone in not giving credit where credit is due. I see the same omission of credit to Trump from the Biden Administration and mainstream media.

Had it not been for the vaccine, our schools and all unnecessary activity would still be halted, including churches. Thanks to a lot of hard work and determination to advance vaccine development, most activity is now almost back to normal.

Furthermore, the Trump Administration had in place a vast distribution system for the vaccine. Thankfully, the Biden Administration put top priority on distribution and has had great success with that, although more needs to be done to get the vaccine into more arms, not only in this country but throughout the world in order to reach herd immunity.

Ms. Hoffman also says President Trump denied science and threatened to withhold funds for Arizona schools, without explaining why he may have done that. She says that, “proved deadly to our nation.” How so? President Trump was willing to try anything to stay the spread of COVID-19. In fact, he personally tried hydroxychloroquine, and received the vaccine as soon as possible.

Recent disclosures have shown hydroxy to be effective in preventing serious COVID-19 if treatment is begun early in the infection.

Ms. Hoffman goes on to say, “With a president who actually listens to public health experts, our country is finally on the cusp of recovery.” The most prominent “science expert” is Dr. Fauci, and he was advising Trump and is now advising Biden, but not without much consternation and doubt.

Furthermore, Mr. Biden may be listening to “we the people,” but he is not doing what we are asking him to do, especially regarding our southern border. But that is another subject.

One last comment by Ms. Hoffman will illustrate the total political nature of her article: “The bottom line is that we are miles ahead of where we were before President Biden took office and brought leadership, action and a path to recovery for our nation.”

There would be no path to recovery had it not been for President Trump pushing the development of a COVID-19 vaccine and getting success in record time.

I am very pleased with what the Biden Administration has done to push the COVID-19 vaccine, and hopefully get herd immunity in our country; but shouldn’t the Trump administration get some credit?
