Communal space for local artists launches in central Phoenix

Brightside Studios is a workspace for creatives, a coffeehouse and more

Brightside Studios recently opened in central Phoenix, offering a unique spin on the traditional art studio for creatives in the Valley.

Located at 839 E. Camelback Road, artists apply for a membership so they can use the studio’s many spacious and well-lit workstations. In addition to offering a workspace, members and visitors can enjoy the coffeehouse, art supply store and music lounge, which features weekly live performances.

“The mission behind Brightside Studios is to create a dream space for Phoenix artists – specifically painters – where they can hang out, work, eat, drink good coffee and utilize a large studio space to express themselves,” said founder Brad Kuenn. “We want to inspire others to create and help alleviate some of the roadblocks they might encounter. We believe it’s important to support local arts.”

Membership packages are offered daily, monthly, and yearly. Unique to Arizona, this membership concept was formed in 2016 when Kuenn had a spark of inspiration while painting a sea-inspired mural for his son’s baby room. Kuenn and his wife Vanessa talked about artists' sruggles and the idea for Brightside Studios was born. Family members helped to purchase the building on Camelback, bringing Brightside from just a dream to a reality when the doors opened earlier this year.

In addition to supporting the arts, the space can be rented out for all special occasions including bachelorette parties, weddings, and corporate events. The coffeehouse serves locally owned Cartel coffee as well as café-style bites such as charcuterie boards and pastries. The café offers a happy hour, craft beer, wine and an ever-evolving menu of creative cocktails.

A retail space sells art and products made from local artisans. Weekly courses such as Paint & Sip allow guests to paint and enjoy a glass of wine while weekly performances showcase local musicians.

“It’s great if you’re searching for a community,” said Kuenn. “Brightside fosters that growth for artists who need a place to feel inspired and get work done.”

Brightside Studios is open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. To learn more about Brightside Studios, its unique concept, amenities, studio spaces, performances, and monthly classes, visit brightsidestudios.com
