Civitan Foundation to feed underserved youths

Civitan Foundation, Inc. will distribute meals to children in need at nine Arizona locations as part of the Summer Food Service Program.

The nonprofit that is dedicated to enriching lives of children and adults with intellectual disabilities, with various programs and employment services, will offer meals prepared by Civitan’s “Cook-er-y,” which is a culinary program at Civitan Village comprised of chefs with disabilities, according to a press release.

Meals will be provided Monday through Friday, the release said, adding that the dates and times are subject to change throughout the summer.

“There are many more locations handing out food through SFSP, but our locations are especially unique because two at risk groups, the special needs community and underserved youth, are truly serving one other,” said Cook-er-y’s Culinary Director Kevin Gregg in a prepared statement.

“Thousands of youth need food during these challenging times, and our differently abled members need job support. It’s a perfect match.”

“Schools letting out for the summer can mean an extra burden on parents less fortunate who rely on free school lunch programs to feed their kids,” said Dawn Trapp, Civitan Foundation CEO, in prepared statement.

“There are nearly 600,000 students receiving free or reduced-price school meals in Arizona that will be eligible for these benefits, and our special needs members are proud to serve them.”
