Musicians performing authentic instruments and music from Greece will add to the weekend celebration coming to MIM July 13-14 in Phoenix.

A weekend of events entitled “Experience Greece” is coming to Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix this month.
This experience will immerse visitors into Greek culture, music, and history from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 13 and Sunday, July 14. MIM is located at 4725 E. Mayo Blvd.
Also, the real Olympic drum from the 2008 Beijing Olympics is displayed exclusively at MIM. The Summer Games open from Paris on July 26.
All activities happen Saturday and Sunday:
9 a.m.-4 p.m., Craft: Pan Flute. Make your own pan flute (or as it’s known in Greek mythology, a syrinx)
11:30-11:45 a.m., Performance: Greek Folk Dancers. Dance along and discover the meaning behind Greek folk dances with the Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral’s dance group.
12:15 p.m.-1 p.m., Workshop: History and Myths of the Classical Greek Lyre. Enjoy a hands-on experience with a reconstruction of an ancient Greek lyre. Join Luthieros — musicians, luthiers, and Greek scholars — as they bring to life the intriguing history and mythology of the classical Greek lyre.
1:45-2:30 p.m., Performance: Lyre of Apollo. Immerse yourself in the ancient melodies that shaped classical Greece. Join Theodore Koumartzis and Marios Podaras as they perform some of Greece’s oldest compositions on the lyre, pandura, and violin.
3:15-4 p.m., Performance: Luthieros. Join Luthieros for another performance about the hidden musical secrets of the classical Greek era, featuring ancient and contemporary compositions.
