ASU graduate leads Phoenix planning department

Joshua Bednarek has been named director of the Phoenix Planning and Development Department.

Bednarek has been with the city for more than 20 years, 15 of those in planning and development. He previously served as the department’s assistant director.

He has a master’s degree in urban and environment planning from Arizona State University and a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Arizona.

“I am excited to lead our incredible team in collaboration with our community to make Phoenix an even greater city," Bednarek said in a release.

During his time in the department, he oversaw the creation of the city’s “transit-oriented development policy framework” for expanding the light rail system and the related Walkable Urban Code, which supports “pedestrian-friendly amenities, business opportunities and more diverse housing options,” the release stated.

Bednarek also oversaw the update of the City's General Plan in 2015, and as director will oversee the current process of the 2025 update to that plan that will go before voters in November 2024, city officials said.
