Arizona State Button Society's annual show will sew it all up in Avondale

Buttonhooks button club is  hosting the Arizona State Button Society annual show, Feb. 18-19, at the Hilton Garden Inn, 11460 W. Hilton Garden Way, Avondale.

ASBS is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

The theme for the show is Anchors Away, highlighting buttons that have anchors, creative displays of anchors, and many other variations.

The show is open to the public, and donations are welcome at the door.

ASBS has five clubs in Arizona: Peoria, Tempe, Prescott and two clubs in Tucson. Club members range in age from 9 to 90 years old.

ASBS members will have the opportunity to exhibit their button trays for competition, and ribbons will be awarded for the top placers. Judging takes place before the show opens to the public.

But when the doors open, showroom button dealers from across the country will fill all the button needs.

The National Button Society was formed in 1938 during the Great Depression. During this time, button collecting had really taken off. It became a distraction for many, plus buttons cost little to nothing back then. For many, button collecting remains  a hobby today.

ASBS is dedicated to educational programs of various topics relating to buttons and their history.
